Hen - Bite wound

Testimony by: Dr. Marco Lapia, ENPA Trieste

Animal category: poultry

Pathology category: traumatic injury

Description: adult hen, loose in chicken coop and garden, attacked by two dogs causing bilateral penetrating wounds on her flanks and a severe wound on her back and tail. Taken immediately to the outpatient clinic, the animal had a severe wound with loss of tissue at the back, with exposure and tearing of the muscle strips. The wounds on the flanks, on the other hand, showed severe lacerations of skin and superficial muscle bands and penetrating wounds caused by teeth. The animal showed reluctance to ambulation of an algic nature and difficulty in maintaining an upright position. Injection pain therapy was started, continued orally by the owners, for 10 days.

Mode of application: Wound cleansing with saline, removal of nonviable tissue fragments, and partial wound closure on the flanks were performed. Therapy was started with Hypermix® Gel Formulation for the wound on the back and Hypermix® Spray Oil on the hips. The wound on the back was then covered with Hypermix® Medicated Gauze and changed daily. The therapy, carried out twice daily by the owners, also included cleaning the wounds with saline before application of the products. The hen was housed at home in a small outdoor enclosure covered with a tight mesh net. After 3 days, the wounds appeared in good condition and showed no signs of infection. The animal was still reluctant to move. On June 23, the tissue showed abundant granulation. The animal resumed breeding. On July 21, the wounds appeared perfectly healed. The hen raises and does not present any problems.

Resolution time: 46 days

HOW TO USE IT

Some animals have more than one laceration, especially in bite wounds.
Traumatic bite wounds can easily be infested with fly larvae (miosis).
All types of lesions, including infested ones, can be treated daily with HYPERMIX®

CLEAN with saline or mild soap and water (Marseille) and remove the necrosis.
The use of disinfectant is not recommended, as it is histolesive and retards the healing process.
To avoid self-inflicted trauma, animals that show doggedness on injuries are advised to be fitted with a protective collar.
At the discretion of the treating veterinarian, and depending on the severity and extent of wounds, administer systemic antibiotic therapy, according to practice.

APPLY HYPERMIX® n oily formulation during the acute phase: resolution of the inflammatory phase is achieved in 5±2 days.

Subsequently, in the granulation phase, HYPERMIX® in gel formulation is recommended to be used over the entire injured surface until complete resolution.

HYPERMIX® is undesirable to dipteran colonizing wounds, allowing them to be managed even during critical periods (summer season, poor sanitary conditions).
